History

HOW WE BEGAN

In 1953 Sheikh Ali Abdullah Al Tamimi established the Tamimi Group to provide pipeline construction, general construction and related services to Saudi Arabia’s fast-growing oil and manufacturing industries. Over the past 60 years, the Tamimi Group has expanded to more than 30 businesses that support the kingdom’s emergence as a major force in the global economy.

In 1979, Sheikh Tamimi opened the kingdom’s first modern supermarket in Khobar and partnered with Safeway, a major North American food retailer, to import products from around the world. The store quickly became a huge success, attracting both Saudi and expatriate customers from across the Eastern Province.

From the beginning, Tamimi Markets offered the widest selection of local, regional and international foods and household products in Saudi Arabia. Other Tamimi Markets soon opened in Aqrabeyah, Dammam, Riyadh and Jeddah.

In 2011, Tamimi Markets unveiled a new modern, attractive and welcoming supermarket design to make shopping even more appealing, convenient and fun. The ccompany's first store on the Al Khobar Corniche was the first to undergo a complete remodel with the new design. The success of this new fresh format and its appeal to customers has led to rapid growth.
 

WHERE WE ARE TODAY

Now in our 38th year, Tamimi Markets is a major supermarket chain in Saudi Arabia with stores from coast to coast that carry a vast assortment of local and imported foods and household products, including exclusive Safeway and Kirkland Signature products from the United States.

Tamimi Markets also is the first grocery chain in Saudi Arabia to feature a Healthy Living department for customers who want to buy natural, healthy, organic and gluten-free products. Healthy Living carries fresh, frozen, chilled and packaged foods and household and cleaning products from around the world.

Tamimi Markets employs more than 2,000 people and operates 40 stores, three distribution centers and a modern fleet of temperature-controlled trucks to deliver the freshest produce and products daily to our supermarkets.

 

LOOKING FORWARD

Tamimi Markets has an ambitious growth strategy for the future, with the goal of having 50 stores in the kingdom by 2020. We will achieve this by building new stores, updating older stores, and modernizing our operations to become more efficient and support our growth.
